Iceland's nature is majestic and powerful, and it demands respect. At Aurora Adventures, safety is not a chapter in our manual; it is the entire book. Our safety protocols are uncompromising and integrated into every aspect of our operations. All our lead guides are certified Wilderness First Responders (WFR) and have undergone extensive training in crevasse rescue, avalanche safety, and emergency management specific to Icelandic conditions. Our equipment, from our vehicle fleet to our glacier gear, is sourced from the world's leading brands and is subject to a rigorous inspection and maintenance schedule. Before every tour, we conduct a thorough risk assessment based on real-time weather and environmental data from the Icelandic Meteorological Office and SAR (Search and Rescue) teams. Choose Your Adventure: A Tale of Two Icelands
Summer: The Midnight Sun Saga (May - August)
Summer in Iceland is a vibrant, green spectacle bathed in the ethereal glow of the Midnight Sun. With nearly 24 hours of daylight, the possibilities for adventure are endless. This is the only time of year the rugged highland roads are open, granting access to otherworldly landscapes like Landmannalaugar and Þórsmörk. The entire country is accessible, making it the perfect season for the epic Ring Road journey. Lush green fields are dotted with Icelandic horses and sheep, and the coastal cliffs teem with puffins and other seabirds. Hiking trails are in their prime condition, waterfalls roar with glacial meltwater, and the days are long enough to pack in multiple activities without feeling rushed. It's a season of boundless energy and life, perfect for those who want to see and do as much as possible in the great, green outdoors. The weather is at its mildest, though still famously unpredictable, offering a comfortable climate for exploration.
Winter: The Realm of Ice & Light (September - April)
Winter transforms Iceland into a dramatic, monochromatic masterpiece. The landscape is draped in a blanket of snow and ice, creating a serene and often surreal beauty. The shorter days and long, dark nights provide the perfect canvas for the main event: the Aurora Borealis. This is the prime season for Northern Lights hunting, an experience that tops the bucket list of travelers worldwide. Winter also unlocks access to the magnificent crystal blue ice caves, which are only safe to enter when the glaciers are frozen. Activities like glacier hiking and snowmobiling take on a magical quality in the crisp winter air. Waterfalls freeze into fantastical ice sculptures, and the low-angled sun casts a golden glow across the snowy terrain. While some regions become inaccessible, the south coast becomes an epic winter wonderland. It is a season that demands a sense of adventure but rewards with profound beauty and experiences impossible at any other time of year.
Gear Up For Glory
The right equipment is key to a comfortable and safe adventure.
What We Provide
For any technical activities, we provide all necessary specialized and safety equipment. You don't need to own or rent expensive gear; we've got you covered with top-of-the-line equipment to ensure your safety and comfort.
- For Glacier Hikes & Ice Caving: Certified helmets, high-quality crampons that fit any sturdy hiking boot, ice axes, and safety harnesses.
- In Our Vehicles: Free Wi-Fi on board most vehicles, USB charging ports, and pure Icelandic spring water to refill your bottle.
- Emergency Equipment: Every guide and vehicle is equipped with comprehensive first-aid kits and communication devices.
What You Must Bring
Your personal clothing is your first line of defense against Iceland's elements. Layering is essential. We will send a detailed packing list upon booking, but here are the non-negotiables:
- Waterproof Outer Layers: A quality waterproof and windproof jacket and pants are mandatory, regardless of the season.
- Warm Mid-Layers: Fleece, a light down jacket, or a wool sweater. We recommend bringing two.
- Thermal Base Layers: Wool or synthetic long underwear (tops and bottoms). Avoid cotton at all costs, as it retains moisture and makes you cold.
- Sturdy Hiking Boots: Waterproof, with ankle support. These are required for glacier activities.
- Accessories: A warm hat, gloves/mittens, a scarf or buff, and warm wool socks are essential year-round.
- Swimsuit: Don't forget it! There are countless opportunities to soak in a hot spring or geothermal pool.
Preparing for Your Journey
Important legal and practical requirements for traveling in Iceland.
Travel Insurance is Mandatory
Due to the adventurous nature of our tours and the unpredictability of Iceland's environment, comprehensive travel insurance is a mandatory requirement for all our guests. Your insurance policy must cover medical emergencies, trip cancellation, trip interruption, and emergency evacuation. For certain high-adventure tours, it must also explicitly cover activities like glacier hiking. Proof of insurance must be presented to your guide before the start of the tour. This policy is for your own protection and financial security in the unlikely event of an incident. We cannot be held responsible for any costs incurred due to a lack of adequate insurance.
Visa and Passport Requirements
Iceland is a member of the Schengen Area. Please check with the Icelandic Directorate of Immigration or your local embassy to determine if you require a visa to enter. Your passport must be valid for at least three months beyond your intended date of departure from the Schengen Area. It is the traveler's sole responsibility to secure all necessary travel documents prior to the trip.
Age and Health Considerations
Our tours are designed to be accessible to a wide range of travelers, but some activities have minimum age and fitness requirements. These are clearly stated on each tour's detailed description page. It is crucial that you honestly assess your physical condition against the tour's difficulty rating. Please disclose any pre-existing medical conditions (e.g., asthma, heart conditions, severe allergies) to us at the time of booking so we can make necessary preparations and advise on tour suitability. We reserve the right to decline participation if a guest's fitness or health is deemed unsuitable for a specific activity for safety reasons.

Meet Your Guide
A Quick Chat with Senior Guide, Elín Jónsdóttir
"For me, Iceland isn't just a place—it's a living, breathing character in a grand story. My job is to introduce you to it."
Born and raised under the shadow of a volcano near Vík, Elín has been exploring Iceland's wild landscapes since she could walk. With over 15 years of professional guiding experience, a degree in Geology, and a certification as a Wilderness First Responder, she embodies the expertise and passion of the Aurora Adventures team. "My favorite moment on any tour," she says, "is that moment of silence. When we've reached a viewpoint, and everyone just stops talking and looks. You can see the landscape reflected in their eyes. That connection is why I do this. I'm not just showing people rocks and ice; I'm sharing the soul of my homeland. My favorite saga is that of Grettir the Strong. He was an outlaw, misunderstood but powerful, much like our nature. It teaches you that what seems harsh on the surface often holds the greatest beauty and strength."
Your Adventure Blueprint
Answers to common questions about booking and preparing for your tour.
We understand that plans can change. Our cancellation policy is as follows: For cancellations made more than 30 days before the tour start date, we offer a 90% refund. For cancellations made between 15 and 30 days, a 50% refund is issued. Unfortunately, for cancellations made within 14 days of the tour, we cannot offer a refund due to commitments with our partners. We highly recommend comprehensive travel insurance to cover any unforeseen circumstances that may lead to cancellation.
Safety is our absolute priority. If we have to cancel a tour due to extreme weather or unsafe conditions, we will first try to reschedule the tour for you. If rescheduling is not possible, you will receive a full refund for the cancelled tour or activity. Please note that this applies to cancellations made by Aurora Adventures. If a tour proceeds but the weather is simply not ideal (e.g., rainy), no refund is issued.
Absolutely. We can accommodate most common dietary restrictions, including vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and lactose-free. It is crucial that you inform us of any dietary needs or severe allergies at the time of booking. This allows us to make the necessary arrangements with our accommodation and food partners on multi-day tours. While Iceland's culinary scene is modern, options can be limited in very remote areas, but we will always do our best to meet your needs.
We specialize in creating bespoke Icelandic experiences. To begin planning a private or custom tour, please navigate to our 'Contact' page and fill out the inquiry form with as much detail as possible. Let us know your desired travel dates, group size, interests (e.g., photography, hiking, geology), and any specific locations you wish to visit. One of our travel specialists will then contact you to schedule a consultation and begin crafting your dream itinerary.
This depends on the tour type. For our multi-day tours, breakfast at your accommodation is always included. Lunches and dinners are typically not included. This allows our guests the flexibility to choose from various local restaurants and cafes based on their preferences and budget. Your guide will always provide excellent recommendations. For some specific full-day tours or special packages, lunch may be included; this will be clearly stated in the tour's "What's Included" section.
All our tour prices are listed in US Dollars (USD) for the convenience of our international clients, but the final transaction will be processed in Icelandic Króna (ISK) based on the exchange rate at the time of payment. We require all bookings to be paid in advance via our secure online payment portal using a major credit card. We do not accept cash payments for tour bookings. For on-the-ground expenses like meals or souvenirs, both cash (ISK) and credit cards are widely accepted throughout Iceland.
Tipping is not a widespread custom in Iceland, and it is not expected. However, it is always greatly appreciated as a gesture of gratitude for exceptional service. If you feel your guide went above and beyond to make your experience special, a tip is a wonderful way to show your appreciation. The amount is entirely at your discretion. Many guests choose to tip an amount they feel is appropriate for the level of service and the duration of the tour.
We are a family-friendly company and welcome children on many of our tours. However, for safety and enjoyment reasons, some of our more strenuous or technical tours (like challenging glacier hikes or long Highland treks) have a minimum age requirement. This is always clearly listed on the tour description page. For families with young children, we highly recommend booking a private tour. This allows us to customize the pace, activities, and duration to be perfectly suited to your family's needs and ensure everyone has a fantastic and safe time.
